Packing for a family trip to Oahu can be exciting but while it’s tempting to throw swimsuits and flip-flops into a suitcase and call it a day, Hawaii’s tropical climate and diverse activities call for a well-thought-out packing list. Take some extra time planning to ensure everyone in the family is comfortable and ready for various adventures on the island.
Clothing
Start with lightweight, breathable clothing like shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, and tank tops. The tropical weather is warm and humid, so pack fabrics that wick away moisture. Don’t forget a light jacket or hoodie for breezy evenings or unexpected rain showers. For footwear, bring flip-flops for the beach and sturdy, closed-toe shoes for hikes like Diamond Head or Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail.

Swim and Beach Gear
With Oahu’s beautiful beaches and pools, swimsuits are a must. Pack at least two per person, so you always have a dry one ready. Reusable beach towels, a large beach bag, and waterproof phone cases are lifesavers. You can always pick all of these things up at the local Walmart, Ross, ABC (travel!!! not liquor) stores, or Walgreens if you like to giveaway your money! If you plan to snorkel, bring your own gear to save on rental costs. Many families also pack sand toys and floats for younger kids.

Sun Protection
Hawaii’s sun is strong, so be prepeared for that. Reef-safe sunscreen is a requirement! It’s a state law which protect the islands’ coral reefs. Bring wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective swim shirts, and sunglasses for everyone. Aloe vera gel is also handy for soothing sunburns. Neck fans or the hand-held ones will be a godsend, especially if yours provides the water mists as bonus. Hawaii's temps are bearable for the most part, but you'll be glad you have these things handy.
Extras for Kids
Traveling with little ones? Pack plenty of snacks, refillable water bottles, and a portable cooler for beach days. Baby carriers, strollers, and collapsible wagons make moving around with young kids easier.
Don’t Forget These Essentials:
- Reusable water bottles (stay hydrated!)
- Small first-aid kit (for minor cuts or scrapes on hikes)
- Rain ponchos (for tropical showers)
- Charging cables and portable batteries for electronics
