Travel has a way of speaking to you in the most unexpected ways.
You travel for the views.
And God meets you in the vulnerability.
Faith, Light, & The Beauty of Release
One thing I loved about the lantern festival experience is how naturally it displayed hope.
Not loud hope.
Not performative hope.
Quiet hope.
Resolved hope.
Stand your ground hope.
Because doesn't always have to look (or feel) like despair.
Grief can show up as a version of hope that whispers:
“You survived.”
“You’re still here.”
“There’s still light, even after loss.”

The Bible says:
“The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.”
— John 1:5
And honestly?
Watching six thousand lanterns glow against the dark ocean looked exactly the way that verse feels.
The darkness canNOT comprehend—or overwhelm—THIS! AT'ALL!
Light refusing to disappear.
Love refusing to go away.
Memories refusing to fade.
If You Plan to Attend The Lantern Floating Ceremony, Here’s My Advice

Come Early!!!!!!!!
The crowds are BIG after a while. And parking is going to be chaotic even before the crowds arrive, so scope out the scene ahead, prepare to walk OR have your bus pass ready! The Honolulu-dwellers know what I'm talking about!!!

Bring water, a towel or mat, and prepare to slow down. Chill out. Be at ease. Bring some snacks! And kick back for a while! But get there early for a favorable spot and that time will FLY by.
People come out there with tents and EVERYTHING so remember...
More is MORE!!!
Be Present
Take your pictures.
But don’t spend the whole time trying to capture the moment for people who aren't there. Capture it for yourself!!! I have to remember this often. Soak in the moment!
And breathe.
It's a reflective time, a sacred one, so give yourself that time.
Moments like this deserve your full attention.
And you'll be blessed to bask in the BIGness of it.

Respect the Sanctity of the Moment
It's not just about the lanterns. It's about honoring those who have gone before us. Those whom we get the honor of addressing as our ancestors, our heavenly witnesses, our angels. The Shinnyo Lantern Floating honors fallen heroes, so treat the space with honor for yourself, your loved ones and others who are grieving their own. It is a time for care. And community.
Let Yourself Feel... Something
Don’t rush through the experience trying to “cover” it like content. OR Experience it like an adventure.
Sit with it.
Reflect.
Close your eyes.
Breathe.
You might be surprised what surfaces.
Why This Experience Stays With You
There are plenty of things to do on Oʻahu. Plenty.
But there is nothing else quite like this.
Because the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Festival reminds you that
Travel is about more than escape.

Sometimes travel helps you remember who you are.
Sometimes travel reconnects you to people you thought grief stole from you.
And sometimes God uses a shoreline, a sunset, and a floating lantern to remind you that healing can still find you too.
What a beautiful thing that is.
